5. EDMUND4 ATKINSON (NATHAN3, JOHN2, SHADRACK1) was born April 02, 1804 in Georgia10, and died March 19, 1862 in Georgia10. He married SARAH E. WADDELL Unknown. She was born December 29, 1809 in South Carolina11, and died August 03, 1858 in Georgia11.

Notes for EDMUND ATKINSON:

Edmund was a planter and owned more than 30,000 acres in Georgia. Some of the land was gained through land grants.

Homeward was the plantation home of Edmund Atkinson, son of Nathan Atkinson, and his wife Sarah Wadell. Mr. Atkinson studied law at the University of Georgia and was admitted to the bar in 1825. Although he was a practicing lawyer, Mr. Atkinson had an intense interest in agriculture and enjoyed life on his plantation so much that he was frequently seen heading homeward. Eventually the plantation became "Homeward" according to the family. At the time of his death, Mr. Atkinson was considered a wealthy and successful plantation owner.

Buried at Black Hammock along side his wife, Sarah. (photos of both headstones on file). Epithaph reads "Into thine hand I commit my spirit."

Notes for SARAH E. WADDELL:

There is a Sarah E. Waddell Atkinson, b: 12/29/1809, d: 8/3/1858, who is buried in Black Hammock cemetery who is probably this Sarah. Headston reads, "Yet in my flesh I shall see God."

Notes for ALEXANDER ATKINSON:

Captain Alexander Atkinson, a brother of the gallant Colonel Edmund N. Atkinson. was born in 1836 and graduated at Franklin College about 1856. He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He entered the Confederate Army early in 1861 and was elected to command the Quitman Guards, and infantry company attached to his brother's regiment. He was wounded in one of the battles in Virginia so severely that he was discharged from the service. He died at Black Hammock in 1912. (Source: History of Camden County Georgia by James T. 7. ALEXANDER SMITH4 ATKINSON (BURWELL3, JOHN2, SHADRACK1) was born January 19, 1815 in Liberty County, Georgia, and died August 03, 1894 in Incachee Plantation, Camden County, Georgia. He married MARY ANN MCDONALD May 05, 1842 in Executive Mansion, Milledgeville, Georgia, daughter of CHARLES MCDONALD and ANNE FRANKLIN. She was born August 14, 1823 in Baldwin County, Georgia, and died July 12, 1884 in Marietta, Georgia.

Alexander S. Atkinson was a Captain of the "Camden Rifles" and was attached to the 26th Georgia. (Source: History of Camden County Georgia by James T. Vocelle, 1914)

Incachee, in northern Camden County, is the home which Alexander S. Atkinson had build and is where he lived most of his life. His son Dr. Burwell Atkinson had the home after his death.

He is buried in Homeward Cemetery (photo of headstone on file).

He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1835 and began to practice law in Savannah. He soon returned to Camden County where he was elected representative in 1840 and 1841. He became interested in planting cotton and developed a fine plantation about seven miles west of Waverly. The house, built on a hill, was said to have been the site of a former Indian village. Because several little creeks and branches flow out from here, the name Incachee, which means "heading of the waters," was given to this plantation. (Source: Camden's Challenge)

Mary Ann McDonald was the daughter of a govenor of Georgia at the time of her wedding to Alexander Smith Atkinson. She is buried in Homeward Cemetery (photo of headstone on file).

Marriage Notes for ALEXANDER ATKINSON and MARY MCDONALD:

Mary's father was the governor of Georgia at the time of her marriage to Alexander S. Atkinson and the wedding ceremony took place in the Executive Mansion in Milledgeville, Georgia.
